2. Improve their critical thinking and problem solving skills.
3. Increase their confidence in working with math concepts.
4. Improve their math vocabulary and reading comprehension of mathematics.
5. Prepare to demonstrate high level of competency on the End of Level Test.
Recommended Materials: (These items should be brought to class everyday)
Paper and pencil Scientific Calculator or Graphing Calculator
Grading: The following percentage scale will be used in determining letter grades for the term:
93– 100 A 73 – 76 C
90 – 92 A- 70 – 72 C-
87 – 89 B+ 67 – 69 D+
83 – 86 B 63 – 66 D
80 – 82 B- 60 – 62 D-
77 – 79 C+ 0 – 59 F
The following weighted criteria will be used to determine the grade percentages:
Attendance (10%): Educational progress is a result of regular attendance, so students are expected to be in class on time and prepared in accordance with the JHS attendance policy. Students will earn 10 points for each day the student is on time for class. Five points earned if the student is tardy (less than 10 min.), three points earned if the student is way-late (10-30 min.), and no points will be earned if the student is more than 30 minutes late or unexcused absence.
Participation (20%): Students are expected to participate in class discussions and activities. There will be many times throughout the year when students will work in groups or pairs and will be encouraged to contribute to the learning of their classmates. Students earn participation points by conducting themselves to add to the educational environment.
Classroom Expectations: Everyone in the classroom is expected to respect others, use appropriate language, respect school property and the property of others, and take responsibility for their actions. Students are also expected to come to class ready to follow directions and work. Students can earn classroom privileges by meeting these expectations. If classroom expectations are not met, students may lose participation points, classroom privileges, or face additional consequences. Creating a comfortable, positive learning environment is a responsibility we share and will enable all of us to have an enjoyable, productive and rewarding year.
Assignments (30%): Daily assignments will be given to help each student practice the skills and concepts taught. Making mistakes is part of the learning process, therefore students will be asked to do all their work in pencil because of the availability it provides them to correct errors. Each day’s assignment will be worth 10 points. You must attempt every problem andshow your work as demonstrated in class notes to earn full homework points. Assignments will be collected and checked daily for completion.
Quizzes / Tests (40%): Tests will be given at the end of each chapter. Tests will cover the material covered in the class discussions, assignments, and activities for each chapter, as well as some review questions from previous chapters. Test dates will be announced in class. If you know that you will be missing a test because of a school activity, vacation, or any other reason, arrangements must be made ahead of time to take the test. If you have an excused absence on the day of a test, you will have one week to make it up.
In this class, you will be expected to take advantage of the Late Start schedule. The ways we will use the time in the morning are as follows:
Cell Phone Policy: Each student needs to understand that cell phone use during class is not allowed at any time unless permission is given by the teacher to use for special circumstances. This includes making calls, receiving calls, any type of text messaging, picture taking, etc. It is expected that cell phones will be turned off (not just on vibrate) and put away during class time. If a student violates this policy they will be asked to give up their cell phone to the teacher for the remainder of class for the first offense, and if a second offense occurs the cell phone will be confiscated and given to an administrator. iPods, MP3 players, etc. are permitted while a student is working on his/her assignment as long as it does not disrupt the classroom. Otherwise the result in the same actions as described above.
NOTE TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS: I will keep the information on Skyward as current as possible, so you can keep an eye on your student’s progress and grade. Please review your student’s grades and attendance periodically through the Jordan High School website.
